I know you probably are thinking what's the big deal. Well believe it or not putting some thought into your team name will go along way later on.
When choosing your name you may want to first decide what type of team you will start and where your team will be playing. Will you be a local town team playing in a local league or playing in tournaments in the state or maybe out of the state.
If you plan on being a local town team the most common selection would be using the towns name. Such as the Toms River Snakes or Camden Cavs as examples. This way everyone will know who you are also by using your town name it will help you when you approach local business for Sponsorship.
If you plan on playing in Tournaments in New jersey most people will have an idea where you are from. When you see teams with names like North Jersey Bombers or Jersey Shore you really can't tell where they are from. Although I will say it is a great conversation starter when your at a tournament. When you hang around tournaments you will here it a lot " Hey where are you guys from"
I have found that Multi town teams and select/elite teams will use New Jersey, Jersey Shore or Central Jersey and so on more often for the simple reason not all their players are from the same town. So if you plan on going out of state you may want to use Jersey in you name. For Town and local tournaments using a town name will work.
Now the second part of the teams name is important. You will want to consider this a little more. This can make your life a little easier when you look for uniforms, start a web site, Banners or make letter head for sponsors. Some people will find names that rhyme like the Jersey Shore Snakes or Storm or the Jersey Jags In my opinion team names that rhyme just sound better but they may not always be the best choice. Choose a name that you can find a good logo for do a little research on logo's for uniforms and also on the Internet. There are few company's out there who sell custom made logo's and you will find a cool logo the kids will like. ( remember that's who should like the team name and logo the most) It will be a lot easier to find logo's for team names such as Bulldogs, Sharks, Lions, Tigers and Bears oh my. ( sorry I just had to do that) then say Lightning. You pretty much are stuck with a one dimensional logo.
A couple of things to think about is maybe choosing your kids first and allowing them to decide on your logo and team name. Also look at your high school team name for an option. That will help you with things like T-shirts hats and such. Parents can purchase a T-shirt from the high school to wear to games and also they help support the school programs as well.
